Come with us to explore the beautiful Urederra with its turquoise ponds and lovely waterfalls, after which we will visit the capital of the Basque Autonomous Community: Vitoria-Gasteiz.

UREDERRA WATERFALLS

Located in the Urbasa-Andía Natural Park in Navarra, the Nacedero del Urederra is one of Spain’s most stunning natural wonders. Since 1987, it has been a protected reserve known for its turquoise waterfalls, moss-covered rocks, and rich biodiversity. The name means “birthplace of the water”, and indeed, the crystal-clear springs and small cascades look like something from a fairytale. It's a place that leaves visitors in awe of nature's raw beauty.

VITORIA-GASTEIZ

Vitoria-Gasteiz, the capital of the Basque Autonomous Community and home to the Basque Parliament and Government. This city offers a perfect blend of history, culture, and modern urban life.

Cathedral of Santa Maria
Also known as the Old Cathedral, this Gothic-style church stands at the highest point of the hill where Vitoria was founded in 1181. Though modest in appearance, its architectural complexity and historical relevance earned it recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2015 as part of the Camino de Santiago network. The cathedral is also famous for its ongoing restoration project, which allows visitors to observe the building’s inner structure and history up close.

Plaza de los Fueros
This triangular square, designed by renowned architect Luis Peña Ganchegui with contributions from artist Eduardo Chillida, was built in 1979 and is located near the Casa de Correos. It is a central venue for public events, especially during the La Blanca Festival in August, when it hosts concerts and other cultural activities.

Plaza de la Virgen Blanca
The heart of the city, this iconic square is nestled between the Old Town (Casco Viejo) and the 19th-century extension (Ensanche). In its center stands a monument commemorating the Battle of Vitoria (1813), a key episode in the Peninsular War. Renovated in 2007, the square remains a popular gathering point for locals and visitors alike.

Celedón

Celedón is the legendary figure who "descends from the sky" with an umbrella to mark the beginning of the Fiestas de la Virgen Blanca each August 5th. His arrival in Plaza de la Virgen Blanca is greeted by huge crowds, who celebrate with champagne and cigars. The event symbolizes the joyful spirit of the city's most cherished festival.

Muralla de Vitoria

Vitoria's medieval wall dates back to the late 11th century and once surrounded the entire town. About half of the original structure remains intact today. Thanks to a major restoration project in the early 21st century, the wall has been preserved and was honored with the Europa Nostra Award in 2010 for heritage conservation.

Machete Square

This small but atmospheric medieval square in the Old Town takes its name from the Machete of San Miguel, which is kept in the nearby church. Historically, city officials would swear their oaths of office here, with the text still engraved in stone beneath the machete. Today, the square hosts cultural events and festivals throughout the year.

The Thread of Time (Mural)
This striking 225-square-meter mural, located in the old clothes market, tells the story of the square’s past. Painted by 13 volunteers over six weeks, it captures the essence of medieval life. The project was supported by the Santa María Cathedral Foundation, and stands as a vibrant tribute to local history and community art.
